DragonCon 2000 Report
By Dan Bollinger
Well, Dragon Con 2000 has come and gone. Overall, it was pretty good (except for the parking situation at the Hyatt). There were lots of guests (as usual). Walter Koenig, Chase Masterson, Robert O'Riley, Bill Mumy, Angela Cartwright, Brad Doruf, and Andreas Katsulas are just a few of those in attendance. From "Battlestar Galactica", there was Richard Hatch, Jack Stauffer, Herb Jefferson and (as a last-minute surprise) Richard Lynch. This was Mr. Lynch's very first convention appearance! He was very friendly and outgoing to all that spoke to him. Truly, one of the best guests at the convention.
There was a mix-up on Thursday that prevented Richard Hatch from showing the trailer. However, that was fixed on Friday and everyone got to see it. As usual, it was given the usual standing ovation. Mr. Hatch also showed a one minute "making of" opening to "The Great War of Magellan". What was shown looked very interesting, even though there was no story to follow. Richard Hatch was joined on stage by Jack Stauffer and Richard Lynch. Mr. Lynch was a surprisingly funny speaker. Before leaving, the trailer was shown once more to another thunderous applause from the near-capacity audience.
Later that evening, Mr. Stauffer entertained fans with his Cabaret act. He sang various showtunes mixed with a very funny roasting of Richard Hatch. In all, it lasted about an hour and it was great. He has a very good singing voice. If you have a chance to see this act, don't miss it.
During the convention, I met three people from Florida that run a Galactica fan organization called (I think) the Rag Tag Fleet. These people were very friendly and enthusiastic and I hope they get onto the Webring soon so more people will be aware of them. I also met ShebaApollo in the dealers room (sorry, but I forgot your name!). She was also very pleasant and I'm glad I got to speak to her. For those that are interested, that idiot Larson supporter never showed up to TRY to give me that "knuckle sandwich", even though I was never hard to find (I knew he was all talk). I see from an earlier post that there was another BBoarder there that I didn't get to meet. Maybe next year...
There were plenty of people that asked me about my Warrior jacket. I told them where I got it, but I also warned them about doing business with Katarra Creations.
One last thing to mention is that Realm Press didn't have a representative at the convention. Those in charge were there last year, but nothing this year. That's too bad...I really wanted to ask them about all of the broken promises.
The costume contest was a blast this year. The best part was the emcees-Andreas Katsulas and Chase Masterson. They worked great together and were quite funny. The best parts were when someone would go onstage and do a stupid routine. Andreas would basically "gong" them by saying things that really embarrassed the person. You may think that sounds cruel, but these people really deserved it. Nothing ruins a good costume faster than a bad routine. It would have been nice to see more Galactica costumes, but that would have taken away from the hundreds of Jedi's and Stormtroopers that were running around. Maybe next year...
Well, that's it for my report from Dragon Con 2000. If I think of something else, I will be sure to post it.
I hope to see most of you there next year, so start planning!
Thanks
