Main Mission 2000 Report

By Shawn O'Donnell

Well another Convention come and gone... MainMission 2000, like every Con shared the same features of every other Con and like every show was special in it's own unique way. Not only did it bring together a wide variety of actors, writers, directors and fan's but it blended the Universes of Battlestar Galactica, Space: 1999, Star Trek and Star Wars. Probably though, the best feature of the show was the good causes it served. First and foremost, this was designed as a charity event, with proceeds going to both the National Parkinson Foundation and GMHC.

On to some of the high points of the show. Not only did Richard show "Battlestar Galactica: The Second Coming" to (once again) breathless audiences he gave NYC a taste of "The Great War of Magellan" with the behind the scenes documentary "Making Of". Sadly, the trailer for "Magellan" is still in pre-production, but fan's in the very near future will be able to view Richard's wonderful concept. Also, our friends in the Space: 1999 revival effort provided a film first premiered at the Breakaway Convention, entitled "Message From Moonbase Alpha" written by Johnny Byrne and featuring Zienia Merton. Wonderful piece of work.

For all that are wondering who was in attendance, I'd like to provide a list of all the great actors/actresses, writers and directors at the Con.

Featured Actors and Actresses:

  • Prentis Hancock: Doctor Who, Space: 1999
  • Richard Hatch: All My Children, The Street's of San Francisco, Battlestar Galactica
  • John Hug: Space: 1999
  • Karen Lynn Gorney: All My Children, Saturday Night Fever, Men in Black
  • Zienia Merton: Doctor Who, Space: 1999, Hammer House of Horror
  • Barry Morse: The Fugitive, Space: 1999, TekWar
  • Corinne Orr: Actress/Voiceover talent, Speed Racer
  • Catherine Schell: The Pink Panther, Space: 1999, Doctor Who
  • Jack Stauffer: All My Children, Battlestar Galactica
  • Grace Lee Whitney: Yeoman Janice Rand, Star Trek
  • Creative/Technical

  • George Bellak: Writer, Space: 1999, The Tenth Level
  • Johnny Byrne: Writer/Story Editor, Space: 1999, Doctor Who, All Creatures Great and Small, Heartbeat
  • Chris Penfold: Writer/Story Editor, Space: 1999, Casualty
  • Keith Wilson: Production Designer, Thunderbirds, Space: 1999, The New Avengers, Star Maiden
  • Additional Guests

  • Nick Abadzis: Comic's writer
  • Tye Bourdony: Comic Illustrator, Starlog, The Lighter Side of Sci-Fi
  • James H. Burns: Actor, Author, Writer (GQ, Starlog, American Film, Heavy Metal, Esquire, Family Computing, Twilight Zone
  • John Muir: Author, Exploring Space: 1999, A Critical History of Doctor Who on Television, An Analytical Guide to Television's Battlestar Galactica, The Films of John Carpenter, A History and Critical Analysis of Blake's 7, Terror Television, Wes Craven: The Art of Horror
  • Phil Platt: Bad Astronomy Web Page
  • Whew!

Did I mention that BattlestarFanClub.com was a guest as well? We'll be doing more shows in the future, that is a certainty. On a side note I want to extend special thanks to Richard Hatch, John Muir and Greg Norris for guesting on our panel at the show. Greg Norris (for those of you that read Cinescape) is a former writer (along with his writing Partner Laura Van Vleet) for The Sci-Fi Magazine, and between them they co-wrote two episodes of Star Trek: Voyager a couple of season's back, "Counterpoint" and "Gravity".

I must also extend a Huge thanks to the crew of Battlestar Phoenix, who served as security:

  • Charles Voboril
  • Doreen Sussman
  • Carl Shmon
  • Pat Caville
  • Another Huge round of thanks to the members of the Empire City Garrison:

  • Darth Vader: Kevin Zabawa
  • Stormtrooper TK329 (White Shoulder Paladron): Lt. Colonel Jonathan Zeron
  • Stormtrooper K823 (Orange Shoulder Paladron): Major Frank Usamanont
  • Stormtrooper TK474 (No Paladron): Private Hector De La Rosa
  • Boba Fett: Ferando Da Rosa
  • Inspector Hoxx (Intelligence Officer): Daniel James
  • In closing, I want to share a side story with everyone from the Con, a kind of a behind the scenes "view". On Broadway, there is a theme Restaurant known as Mars 2112 ...you board a spaceship and "go" to Mars before you eat...fabulous place. The first night in town I went with Charles Voboril and Doreen Sussman (of Battlestar Phoenix) to supper there. Now they were wearing their Battlestar jackets... Guess who got bumped up to the front of the line? (The Host for that evening LOVES Battlestar Galactica!) We told him in passing that we would try to bring Richard in the next night...he was kind of "yeah...right", till the next night when we did of course! I thought the poor guy's eyes were going to fall out of their sockets. The next day the Stormtroopers, Darth Vader and Boba Fett made their way up Broadway to the Restaurant...dragging in 30 people in their wake of course. For all of you who know NYC, it takes A LOT to get people to turn their heads.

My thanks to Tom Lowery and Robert Ruiz for getting this thing off the ground...great job guy's.

A very special thanks to Michael Faries as well...he was involved with the planning for the Convention from the beginning and was able to give the show a big dose of Battlestar Galactica that otherwise wouldn't have been there. Please visit both BattlestarPegasus.com as well as BattlestarGalactica.com and send Michael you're commentary!

And for all of us, the future awaits....
